Tears Must Fall
“Tears left unshed
turn to poison
in the ducts.”
– Alice Walker (1944 – )
U.S. novelist and poet
“That very law which moulds a tear
And bids it trickle from its source –
That law preserves the earth a sphere,
And guides the planets in their course.”
– Samuel Rogers (1763 – 1855)
British poet and art collector
TEARS MUST FALL
(No eye shall not cry.)
minuscule drops that sparkle the eyes
real as dew on petals so fresh
marks of sentiment one can’t disguise
they soften hearts but scald the flesh.
from what wellspring do they come profuse
to awash eyelids till they swell?
what curse from which god and for what use
that mortals must cry, as in spell?
man cannot reason, only perceive
lucid tears must dwell in the eye
and so, for as long as man shall live
tears must fall, no eye shall not cry.
happiness and sadness.
