From the humble kitchen of Paet and Berning Detera in Sorsogon City to posh souvenir outlets, Tia Berning’s Pili Candies and Handicraft have come a long way as Bicol’s award-winning Pili manufacturer.
Considered a pioneer in Pili manufacturing in Bicol, Tia Berning’s was the first to introduce good packaging and label of Pili products in the region. Since their beginning in 1988, the company has received accolades as National Rural Entrepreneur in 2003 from Quedancor, a government financing institution and Outstanding OTOP SME in 2008 by the Department of Trade and Industry – Sorsogon Provincial Office.
Tia Berning’s has wowed international audience through its participation in trade shows and food events in Hong Kong and United States.
The company, now run by Tia Berning’s youngest son Ryan, continues to revolutionize and set the trends in making Sorsogon’s “pasalubong Pili candies” worth buying and giving. They have made it a part of their corporate mission to support more than 30 Pili farmers and 30 handicraft producers in Sorsogon as well as micro and start-up entrepreneurs. Their Pili production gives employment to more than 20 families, either as a regular subcontractor or supplier of various products they sell. They are also part of the Pili Processors Association of Sorsogon and OK Bikol Foundation.
Over the years, they have expanded their offerings from Pili candies and confectioneries to include handicraft items, thus, making their company a one-stop shop for visitors and travelers to Sorsogon.
For their Business Mission to the United States, Tia Berning’s Pili candies will introduce new, exciting flavors of Pili products: cinnamon-glazed Pilinuts, Pili toffee, and chocolate-coated Pili nuts.
Their success is proof that sincere and mutual cooperation among well meaning private entrepreneurs and the government can have positive effect on livelihood generation. Their steadfast commitment to quality coupled with an outstanding product and government support shape Tia Berning’s company into what it is today.
